2 million dollar lottery winner still using his food stamp.

So read this article before you read my commentary below. http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_localdtw/20110518/ts_yblog_localdtw/2m-michigan-lottery-winner-defends-use-of-food-stamps

Commentary:
"I do not understand why everyone is eating this guys head off.  He is not breaking any laws, so what if he is still using food stamps.  Whether he is getting food stamp or not does not make paying taxes any less.  Also there are plenty of people who receive food stamp who do not deserve it or there may be other people worse off than them, but that's life.  There was a lady who commented stating how pissed she was that the guy is still getting food stamps when she is a mother of 4 who did not qualify.  News flash lady, no one told you to breed all of those kids, if you could not take care of them.  This man is 59 years old, probably worked all of his life, just because he got lucky and won the lottery does not mean he should stop using food stamp, especially since he is not breaking any laws.  It's the equivalent of a well off college student using free student aids and grants even though they can fully pay for school on their own. Take advantage of all the benefits there are, especially free ones.  This man even checked to make sure he could still use his food stamp.  He is not doing anything wrong.  Leave the guy alone."

I posted my commentary, and a few people replied, as expected I received more thumbs down than up.  A few comments are below and so is my response.

Frenchy-My mother is a single mother of 4 with no help or child support from my father b/c he lives in a different country. She struggled and raised her kids to the best of her abilities with no help from the gov't(maybe she did not qualify). People should do their best and try to support their kids to the best of their abilities. As for your sister what happens in life is not guaranteed, we just have to look up and move on even through the obstacles. She's lucky she got even child support. B/c a lot of woman don't even get that, yet they have to find a way to survive. Life is not fair, but why should we be angry at someone who decide to take advantage of all the opportunities they qualified for just b/c we are not them or did not try? If you want to be angry at someone be angry at the gov't, this guy is simply the scapegoat.  Better yet, be angry at yourself, question your feelings and motives, most problems are there b/c of our ego.

Maybe your sister should have thought about her future before she got married and had kids. Then she would have been able to make a living that would have supported her and her children. Nobody should every rely on anybody or expect them to. Life throws you curve balls.Getting an education is the best way to insure that you will be able to take care of your family when something like that happens.

Tell the same thing to my sister who had to raise her two sons on her own when her husband ditched her for someone younger. She had to drag him into court to pay child support of $150 a month for two kids back in the 1980's. Yeah, its all her fault for loving her husband and having his children. When she went in to get a food stamp card she was told, and I quote, "She was not a minority" my sister just stared at the lady in shock and immediately asked to speak to her supervisor. My sister had to talk to the county supervisor to eventually get her card and she was making just above minimum wage, having to pay for child care, etc... This guy may not be breaking any legal aspect of the law, I think what most people are talking about is the morality of his choice.

  • EDIT:  I asked a question about this article and someone brought up a interesting point, here is what they said.

" My take is the same as for any people who take advantage of a system that is meant to help people unable to help themselves -selfish, greedy, scum of the earth. Sadly, a representative of the majority of people today who are out for themselves only.

Bad Karma is probably why he wound up on food stamps to begin with and here the universe is giving him another chance to stand up and do right and he's blowing it.

You made some valid points I did not look at it in that light. Still he is the scapegoat for the gov't mistake. He is simply taking advantage of free opportunities. Much like a well off college student getting grants and free aid for school when they do not need it.  But I do see that the issue is with his morality, the universe opened up a chance for him to win money, so he should realize this and stop leeching so someone else may have an opportunity to get what he is now using.  The real issue lies within himself.
